These rules must be followed to ensure the absence of unnecessary injury, death, or diversion from criminals. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There\nare three different classes of explosives: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>High explosives<ul><li>Detonate by blasting cap when unconfined<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Examples: blasting caps, detonating cord, dynamite, shaped charges, boosters, flash powder, bulk salutes, etc. <\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>Low explosives<ul><li>Deflagrate (burn away with sudden flame &amp; sharp combustion) when confined<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Examples: black powder, display fireworks, safety fuses, igniters, igniter cords, fuse lighters, etc. <\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>Blasting agents<ul><li>Any material or mixture consisting of fuel &amp; oxidizer: intended for blasting &amp; cannot be detonated by No. 8 blasting cap when unconfined<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Examples: emulsions, water gels &amp; slurries, ammonium nitrate fuel oil (ANFO)<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>There\nare five different types of storage magazines for the safe storage of\nexplosives: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Type 1:<ul><li>For storage of all classes of explosives<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Permanent structure<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Bullet-, fire-, weather-, and theft-resistant<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>Type 2: <ul><li>For storage of all classes of explosives<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>If placed indoors: <ul><li>Fire- and theft-resistant<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul><ul><li>If placed outdoors:<ul><li>Fire-, weather-, theft-, and bullet- and resistant <\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Must be affixed to position, but cannot have direct contact with the ground<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Ventilated <\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>Type 3: <ul><li>For temporary attended storage of all classes of explosives<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Fire-, weather-, and theft-resistant<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Portable<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>Type 4: <ul><li>For storage of low explosives, blasting agents, &amp; non-mass detonating detonators<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Fire-, weather-, and theft-resistant<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>Type 5: <ul><li>For storage of blasting agents<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Weather- and theft-resistant if stored outside<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Inspections\n&amp; Compliance<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Magazines\nmust be inspected every seven days to ensure no one has tried to enter these\ncontainers without authorization. Permanent magazines (if kept outside) must\nhave a sufficient foundation or metal skirting to prevent access. A magazine\nstored indoors may not contain more than 50 pounds of explosives and cannot be\nstored inside a home or dwelling. To store explosives indoors of a business located\nnear a residence, a request for variance must be submitted to the ATF and\napproved. The local fire safety authority should be notified of the storage of\nexplosive materials for emergency preparedness. Furthermore, the ATF requires\nexplosives to be stored at varying distances to transportation routes,\ninhabited buildings, and other explosives. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As\nalways, we recommend a conversation with local authorities in your jurisdiction\nto ensure specific regulations are met and adhered to.
