Blasting agents stored \u200b<u>with<\/u><u>\u200b<\/u> high explosives must be stored in \u200b<strong>Type-1<\/strong>\u200b or Type-2 magazine. Low explosives must be stored in <strong>Type-1<\/strong>\u200b, -2, or -4 magazines.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Type-1<\/strong>\u200b permanent magazines must be:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Bullet-resistant<\/li>\n<li>Fire-resistant<\/li>\n<li>Weather-resistant<\/li>\n<li>Theft-resistant<\/li>\n<li>Inspected at least once \u200b<u>every 7 days<\/u><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><u>Type-1 Storage Specifications<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Locations of Outdoor Magazines\n<ul>\n<li>No closer to inhabited buildings, passenger railways, public highways, or other magazines than minimum distances specified in <u>\u200b<\/u><u>Tables of Distances<\/u><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>(https:\/\/www.atf.gov\/explosives\/table-distances)<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Locations of Indoor Magazines\n<ul>\n<li>May not be located in a residence or dwelling<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Vehicular Magazines (used only for low explosive storage)\n<ul>\n<li>Immobilize by removing wheels or installing a kingpin locking device when unattended<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><u>Type-1 Housekeeping and Construction<\/u><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Hinges and hasps must be installed so that they cannot be removed when doors are closed and locked. They must be attached to doors by:\n<ul>\n<li>Welding, Riveting, or Bolting (nuts inside door)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Locks must be protected by \u00bc\u2033 steel hoods to prevent theft. This doesn\u2019t apply to doors secured on inside via bolt, lock, or bar that cannot be actuated from the outside. Each door must have:\n<ul>\n<li>2 mortise locks<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u25cb\u00a0 2 padlocks fastened in separate hasps &amp; staples<\/p>\n<p>\u25a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Padlocks must have at least 5 tumblers and casehardened shackles (at least a 3\/8\u2033 diameter)<\/p>\n<p>\u25cb\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 A combination of mortise lock and padlock<\/p>\n<p>\u25cb\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 A mortise lock requiring 2 keys; or a 3-point lock<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Lighting must meet National Electrical Code and\/or NFPA 70-81 standards\n<ul>\n<li>Electrical switches and wiring must be located outside of the magazine<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u25a0\u00a0\u00a0 Battery-activated safety lights or lanterns are acceptable<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Ground must slope away for drainage or provide other acceptable means for drainage<\/li>\n<li>Magazines must be clean, dry, and free of grit, paper, empty packages\/containers and trash<\/li>\n<li>Spark-producing utensils cannot be stored in magazine<\/li>\n<li>Explosive leakage stains must be cleaned<\/li>\n<li>Deteriorated explosives must be destroyed per manufacturer instructions<\/li>\n<li>The surrounding area must be kept clear of trash, brush, dry grass, or trees (less than 10&#8242; tall), for no less than 25&#8242; radius<\/li>\n<li>Volatile materials must be kept at least 50&#8242; away from outdoor magazines \u25cf Live foliage to stabilize an earthen covering is acceptable<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<table width=\"624\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"312\"><strong><u>Item<\/u> <\/strong><\/td>\n<td width=\"312\"><strong><u>Requirements<\/u> <\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"312\">Foundation<\/td>\n<td width=\"312\">Brick, concrete, cement block, stone, or wood posts. Interior walls lined with brick, solid cement blocks, hardwood (no less than 4\u201d thick) or at least 6\u201d sand fill between interior and exterior walls.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"312\">Interior Walls (Masonry and metal walls)<\/td>\n<td width=\"312\">Constructed of, or covered with, non-sparking material. Ferrous metal nails in floor and walls must be blind nailed, countersunk, or covered\u00a0 with non-sparking material.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"312\">Wood Wall<\/td>\n<td width=\"312\">Exterior walls must be covered with iron or aluminum no less than 26-gauge. Inner walls must be covered with non-sparking material constructed to provide at least 6\u2033 space between outer and inner walls. Space filled with coarse dry sand or weak concrete.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"312\">Ventilation (no openings except for entrances and ventilation)<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/td>\n<td width=\"312\">Ventilation must be provided to prevent dampness and heating of explosives. Vent openings must be screened. Openings in side walls and foundations must be offset or shielded for bullet-resistance. Magazines with foundation and roof ventilators with air circulating between side walls and floors, or<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<table width=\"624\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"312\"><\/td>\n<td width=\"312\">side walls and ceiling must have a wooden lattice lining (or equivalent) to prevent stacking explosives against walls.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"312\">Roof (bullet-resistant ceiling \/roof)<\/td>\n<td width=\"312\">For buildings without fabricated metal roofs, outer roof must be covered with no less than 26-guage iron or aluminum, fastened to at least 7\/8\u2033 sheathing.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>If a bullet could be fired directly through the roof into magazine at an angle to strike explosives, the roof must:<\/p>\n<p>\u25cf\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Include a sand tray lined with a layer of nonporous material, filled with at least 4\u2033 coarse, dry sand\u2014located at tops of inner walls covering entire ceiling area (except ventilation); or<\/p>\n<p>\u25cf\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Be a fabricated metal roof of 3\/16\u2033 plate steel lined with 4\u2033 hardwood. (For each additional 1\/6\u2033 plate steel, hardwood lining may be decreased by<\/p>\n<p>1\u2033.)<\/p>\n<p>\u25cf\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 For roofs not of fabricated metal, outer roof must be covered with no less than 26-guage iron or aluminum, fastened to at least 7\/8\u2033 sheathing.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"312\">Doors<\/td>\n<td width=\"312\">Must be constructed of at least \u00bc\u2033 plate steel and lined with at least 2\u2033 hardwood<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"312\">Igloo, \u201cArmy-type structure\u201d, tunnel, and dugout<\/td>\n<td width=\"312\">Must be built of reinforced concrete, metal, masonry, or combination.
